Pediculosis (Lice)
Head lice is a communicable condition (contagious to others) requiring exclusion from school by the Texas Department of Health and Shepherd ISD board policy. A lice infestation can happen to anyone, but there are things that can help prevent you from getting lice. Lice do not jump or fly, they crawl. Tell your child not to share combs, hats or other clothing. If you do get lice in your family do the following things to get rid of them completely:

 Treat hair with a head lice shampoo. Use the product according to labels and follow directions. Some studies have seen that lice are becoming resistant to these products. If you don’t see results contact your physician or try some natural products. Example of natural products are baby oil, olive oil, etc.
 Remove all eggs from hair. The only way to totally get rid of lice is by getting rid of all of the lice and their eggs. If you don’t get rid of the eggs, some will hatch out in a few days and start the cycle all over again.
 Check all family members and close contacts.
 The house must be cleaned of any possible lice and eggs. All combs, brushes, hair accessories must be either boiled, bleached or soaked in lice shampoo. Sheets, blankets, pillows, etc. must be washed. Coats sweaters, hats, anything that could have been in contact with the hair areas, must be washed.
